the Secret of Sara Taylor

the Secret of Sara Taylor

I was taught to be an obedient child of God but I, Mary Taylor, fourteen years of age, was living the biggest deceit. We lived in rural Salem Village, surrounded by unkind wilderness and endless rivers and ‘twas Spring 1691. I was supposed to act like I was the only child when I had a younger sister named Sara, twelve years of age, hidden away.

My mother and father had told me that she was possessed by a malevolent spirit that made her babble nonsense, see things that weren’t there, scream or burst into uncontrollable laughter, and have violent fits but instead of going to the church for help, where she surely would be killed, they kept her a secret and told the church that she died from a severe fever the year before, while they privately prayed for her soul. Even though I secretly thought that her condition wasn’t caused by evil but by a bump on the head, I never said such things aloud for people would think of me as mad or ill-mattered.

The only one outside of the family that knew about Sara was our mean-spirited neighbor,  Mr. Thomson, whom my father worked for as a harvester in his small corn field. He had seen Sara by accident by the window and he said that as long as my father kept growing and picking beautiful, delicious ears of corn for him, he would keep our secret but if not, he would tell Reverend Samuel Parris about our unholy ways. Even though the soil was rocky and poor, my father always managed to grow perfect corn. Our horrible secret remained kept and ’twas peaceful until 1692.

The cold winter had not been kind. Many people had died from fever and exposure. Crops also suffered and Mr. Thomson’s corn field was frosted. When Spring finally arrived, the field was dead. My father could only pick four ears of corn that were not prey to the harsh winter and the damage to the field couldn’t be undone. All that we could do was pray that Mr. Thomson did not act upon his threat.

On June 1692, we had a great deal of anxiety on our minds. Many women, including Margaret Jones, a kind midwife and the reverend’s own colored slave named Tituba were arrested, being accused of witchcraft. We knew if the church ever knew about Sara, she would be in danger. One day, Sara was in the corner, speaking to herself with her eyes fixed on a piece of thread that she was holding and Mother and I were sewing a dress for her, while Father was outside working, when Reverend Parris,  the deputy governor Thomas Dudley, and Mr. Thomson burst in. Father came quickly in after them.

“Good morrow Gentlemen,” said Father, trying to smile, “What is this unorthodox visit about?”

“About your youngest daughter Sara,” said Mr. Thomson with pleasure and disdain, pointing at her, “She’s a witch! She poisoned my corn field.”

“Neither of my daughters would do such a thing,” exclaimed my father, “The winter was just bitter and killed the crops!”

“I saw the witch during the winter conjuring in my field,” Mr. Thomson lied.

Then, the reverend stepped forward. Dressed in a black robe, he was a tall man with brown hair and eyes, and a pointed nose that made it look like he was always looking down upon you, smelling the stench of sin on you.

“Thou has lied about a child’s death,” said Reverend, “and thy house is full of sin and evil alliances!”

“You misunderstand,” said Father desperately, “Maybe a witch is afflicting her…please…help.” They ignored his pleas.

“Sara Taylor and the rest of your family are declared as under arrest for witchcraft,” said the deputy governor, presenting Father with a condemning scroll. Before I knew it, we were being dragged out of our home and Sara was madly screaming, kicking, biting, and spitting the entire time. Our neighbors just watched with fear and disgust.

I couldn't let this happen. In a quick moment, I turned my back on the puritan ways and a spirit of courage took over me. My family wasn't evil and my sister wasn't a witch. Her mind just differed from ours. I stomped on the deputy's foot and grabbing my sister by the hand, I ran with her. I wanted to save Mother and Father also but they said: “Go!” As we ran, I could hear the men chasing us and other angry villagers joining them, chanting: "Witches...witches...witches!”

We came to a bridge over Crane river. As judging eyes approached us,  I realized that there was no place for me or my sister on this plain. I was taught to be an obedient child of God but people used Him to control, to condemn. Thinking fast, I said: “Jump!” We both plummeted into the river and let ourselves painfully drown. No one stopped us because ‘twas said that witches would simply bob on the surface. They learned of our innocence too late.

My 2nd Family

My group of friends have been my secondary family throughout the years; (elementary school, junior high, high school, and now). They’re the people that know all of the sides of me, which they truly accept. They’re fun, dysfunctional, hilarious, loud, and perfectly imperfect. I love them.

CD Discs Not Obsolete, They're Fun

I have an ipod and an itunes account. I absolutely love the new technology for getting music. It's easy but I sometimes enjoy listening to an actual CD. Most music can be downloaded now but some music still can't be downloaded due to copyright laws. Sometimes it's just faster to buy the CD. Plus, I think that it's fun to listen to a whole CD of one of my favorite singers at times and it's also sort of a hobby of mine to collect CDs.

When I was younger, I got a lot of my CDs from Target but recently I've noticed that their music section is alphabetically out of order and their selection isn't so big anymore.
On Friday, I tried to find the latest Hollywood Undead CD and of course, they didn't have it. I downloaded Hollywood Undead's new songs on itunes but I still want the CD. People tell me that CDs are becoming obsolete and that's why the stores' selections are so crappy. I disagree. Stereos are still made with CD players.
Why would manufactures make a player for something that is obsolete? Huh? Riddle me that Batman! :-)

Not the End of the World

I'm a big, big 1D fan and I wasn't happy at all that Zayn left either. I was whining and quoting Shakespeare, lol. It is disappointing and sad but other Directioners are going way overboard. They're almost acting like he died or something, like the world is falling into ruins.

I'm here to say: Chill people, it's not the end of the world! True, it won't be the same but the other four guys are still together and I also read a rumor this morning that he's planning on a solo career. Maybe it is what I thought; he's doing what Justin Timberlake did and becoming a solo singer. Breathe, think happy thoughts!

Zayn Malik Quitting One Direction! :(

The mysterious and sexy Zayn Malik has quit One Direction. 1D will now be a four-man group. :( I'm having bad Déjà vu. Did Justin Timberlake sort of do the same thing right before 'NSYNC broke up? Is this the end of another awesome boy band?

Zayn says: "My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologize to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world."

I'm sure that the four guys will do great for a while because they're so talented and entertaining but it won't be the same. I'll miss him but I do wish Zayn the best though.

WC on the Radio!

Jason Hynson, the executive director of Wonderland Camp was on an Ozarks radio station, talking about the coolness of Wonderland Camp and asking for donations. During the interview, he told a cute story about me. He sent the link to the MP3 of the radio show to me and I thought that it'll be cool to share it with y'all. Take a listen: http://www.wonderlandcamp.org/mp3/Wonderland_Camp_2015.03.06_Jason_Hynson.mp3

Btw, if you want to make a donation to camp, that would be awesome! :) Go to: http://www.wonderlandcamp.org/donate.asp

Feel Good Time

Every late night, I see a lot of commercials for food and new gadgets. I don't know how many times that I craved something greasy and fating at midnight (damn Arby's, lol) but some commercials touch my heart. I'll be waiting for Criminal Minds or Archie's Weird Mysteries to come back on when I get all teary-eyed with the biggest smile on my face. Sometimes, (this might sound incredibly cheesy, I know), I see the most up-lifting messages. Here's some examples.  :-)

Dark Reboot of "Power Rangers"

The video above is "POWER/RANGERS", a short film by Joseph Kahn. It's a dark version of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers." I loved Power Rangers as a kid and I admit that I still watch it sometimes. When I heard about this film, my first thought was:"Oh great, another show from my childhood is ruined!" I usually don't like things from my childhood to be rewritten or changed like the time when Disney made a creepy video game or like when I seen that Rainbow Brite had been turned into an anime cartoon. I get ridiculously angry (lol) but I watched this video out of curiosity. As I was watching, I was amazed. Even though it was dark and gory, I liked it. I might have even watched this as a full-length movie. Power Rangers isn't ruined. This short film just had a darker plot than the 90's show but I wouldn't suggest letting kids watch it though. It would be a rated 'R' movie.

Victim is Surviving "Slender Man" Attack

The Remarkable Recovery of the Girl Stabbed 19 Times for 'Slender Man'

Less than a year after Payton Leutner was savagely stabbed 19 times, allegedly by her best friend and another girl, and left for dead in the woods, the 13-year-old is enjoying the best revenge — living — and happily at that. “She’s not a victim,” the Leutner family’s hired spokesperson, Stephen Lyons, tells Yahoo Parenting. “She’s a survivor. There’s a big difference.”

From the early days of her recovery, Payton, of the Waukesha, Wis., has shown remarkable resilience. When her mother, Stacie Leutner, asked how she managed to crawl out of the trees and onto a paved path where a cyclist found her and called 911 that horrific May 31 morning, she simply replied, “Because I wanted to live,” Stacie told ABC News’ “20/20”.

The then-12-year-old — who just celebrated her birthday on Friday — had been blindsided by the shocking attack. It took place the morning after a sleepover at pal Morgan Geyser’s, along with Morgan’s friend Anissa Weier, both 12 at the time. The duo allegedly lured Payton into the woods by telling her they were going to play hide-and-seek, then they tried to murder her, viciously stabbing her with a five-inch-long kitchen knife and wounding her arms, legs, diaphragm, liver, stomach, and chest. “If the knife had gone the width of a human hair further [to penetrate her heart], she wouldn’t have lived,” Payton’s surgeon John Keleman told “20/20.”
The girls, both in custody and charged with first-degree attempted homicide, had reportedly planned the attack for months in a disturbing attempt to gain favor with — and reprieve for their families from — the fictional horror story kidnapper “Slender Man,” whom Payton says the two believed was real. Geyser, since diagnosed as schizophrenic, appeared in court Tuesday with Weier for preliminary hearings regarding their case. A judge has yet to determine whether or not to green light them for trial next month. The girls have been charged as adults, but Fox6Now reports that Geyser’s attorney is attempting to have them tried in juvenile court instead.

“I think the hardest part for me is that Payton put this trust in this girl,” Stacie, who also has a younger son, Caden, told “20/20.” “And Morgan knew that she was going to do this to Payton that night. She knew, and to betray somebody like that and to hurt somebody like that… Both of my kids have been robbed of their innocence. No child should ever have to go through something like this. Payton did, and now those closest to her say that she’s come out the other side stronger for it. “I’m astonished at the way that she’s been able to recover,” her father, Joe Leutner, added in the same interview.
Still, it’s been a draining process, Lyons tells Yahoo Parenting. Payton spent her summer in and out of surgeries, doctor appointments, and therapy sessions before reporting back to school to begin junior high in September. “She is an amazing young lady,” says Lyons. “She has an incredibly brave heart. She and the entire family are an inspiration. Despite all the things they’ve gone through, their attitude is still just to think that tomorrow will be a better day.”

In fact, the family considers itself lucky. “At the end of the day, their little girl wakes up in her bed with her dog and two cats and her gecko and they’re all together,” says Lyons. “Payton’s doing great, too, in school, which she loves. This is just one chapter in a very long book for them.”

The resilience Payton has displayed thus far tells family physician and parenting expert Deborah Gilboa, MD, that the teen’s future is bright indeed. “What she endured is not something she’ll have to recover from every day for the rest of her life,” Gilboa tells Yahoo Parenting. “It will inform her perspective,” she says, but not define her. “In some ways, this horrible thing that happened will strengthen the resilience she’s already shown and make her life so much better,” she says. “She can use this terrible experience to have a great life.

Joe has already declared his little girl is built for big things. He told “20/20” that his daughter, for whom they’ve established Go Fund Me and Hearts for Healing fundraisers to cover future treatments, is “meant to do something really special.”
My thoughts: I think that it's ridiculous that someone tried to stab this girl over a fictional killer. I love Creepypasta and Slender Man is a popular Creepypasta character but I know that it's just an online urban legend. If you don't  know the difference between fiction and reality, you really shouldn't listen to these kind of stories in the first place. I heard that some blamed Mr. Creepypasta for what those girls did, which is also dumb. He's just the storyteller. My thoughts and prayers go out to Payton and her family. Keep your chin up, Payton and keep smiling. I'm happy that you're recovering.
