The Empowering Dream

I had a dream that I was in a pop girl group. The other three girls were in wheelchairs like me. I was having fun performing, but the other girls were mean. We entered a talent show, hoping to get noticed. We performed the song "In The Closet" by Michael Jackson.

The other girls kept messing up during our performance, but when we rolled off stage, they blamed me for their mistakes and yelled at me, making me cry. One of the judges was my former school principal (people from my past being in my dreams have been a recurring theme lately), and he saw the girls screaming at me backstage, then me sobbing in front of my dressing room door. He encouraged me to reenter the show as a solo act, saying, "You shouldn't be bullied like this. You're such an amazing person! If you want success, push yourself to be heard. Don't be a follower or anyone's scapegoat! I know you have it in you, forget those brats! Show everybody your talent."

He then gently wiped my tears away. I smiled and got the confidence to leave the group. He talked the other judges into letting me reenter the show as a solo singer. I rushed into the restroom, cleaned my face, and redid my makeup. Then, I rolled up on stage to the microphone under the hot and almost blinding spotlight. I was extremely nervous, my heart pounding, but I took a deep breath and tried to relax. As the music started, I heard him whisper, "You got this."

I began singing the song "Who Will Love Me As I Am."

I had everyone's attention. The audience and judges were smiling, astonished by my voice. The mean girls rolled out of the building angrily. When I belted out the final note, I got a standing ovation. I heard my principal cheer out over the roar of the audience, "That's how you do it!" I wanted to wave at him, but he disappeared into the crowd. Then, I woke up. When I opened my eyes, I felt happy, empowered, and ready for the day.
